Online disposable vape Ireland are still on sale in Ireland today, but not for much longer. A new law has been signed, the clock is running and both shoppers and retailers need to understand what happens next. This guide sets out the timeline, explains what counts as a single-use vape, covers the impact on adults who vape and outlines how to prepare.
The Public Health (Single-Use Vapes) Act 2026 has been passed and signed. It came into operation on 24 July 2026, but the prohibition on selling single-use vapes takes effect on 24 January 2027. In other words, the law exists, but the six-month transition period is still running.
Industry and retailers have six months from commencement to clear non-compliant stock. Retailers can sell through their existing stock during this window before selling becomes an offence. The HSE’s National Environmental Health Service has said it will engage with businesses so they understand their obligations.
| Date | Milestone |
| 15 July 2026 | Act enacted |
| 24 July 2026 | Act commenced |
| 2 August 2026 | Retail licensing system for nicotine inhaling products operational |
| 24 January 2027 | Sale of single-use vapes prohibited |
The Act defines a single-use vape as one that is not designed or intended to be re-used. The definition covers online retail sales as well as in-store sales. The key test is design. A device built for refilling and recharging in normal use is treated differently from one meant to be discarded when empty.
Marketing language matters less than construction. A product described as “rechargeable” may still be judged on whether it can realistically be refilled or have parts replaced. If you are unsure about a specific device, ask the retailer to confirm its status and check HSE guidance.
The government has pointed to two main reasons. Official documents say single-use vapes are disproportionately used by young people and that the Irish enforcement authority found them more likely to be non-compliant. They also create waste and electrical recycling problems. The ban also covers single-use vapes that contain no nicotine, to keep the response coherent.
The island currently has two approaches. Northern Ireland banned single-use vapes from 1 June 2025, with businesses given six months to sell existing stock. Irish shoppers who have seen the Northern Irish rules should note that the Republic’s law has its own dates and enforcement process, so the two should not be confused.
Enforcement will sit with health officials. An authorised officer, who will be an environmental health officer, can serve a prohibition notice on a seller of single-use vapes. Separately, a licensing system for the retail sale of tobacco and nicotine inhaling products became operational for all retailers on 2 August 2026. The legislation allows increased penalties for offences such as selling to minors, including licence revocation. Retailers should confirm their licence status and check the latest HSE guidance.
For adults who use disposables, the ban means a change of device, not an end to vaping. Reusable options already exist and often cost less over time:
Switching before the deadline gives you time to find a nicotine strength and flavour that suits you without a rush.
Nicotine pouches Ireland are available in different flavours and strengths, giving adult consumers a range of options based on their individual preferences.
Other rules are in progress. A separate amendment bill is intended to regulate vape flavours and appearance, set a minimum age of 18 for all nicotine products and restrict retail display and advertising. The details may change before it becomes law, so check current guidance before stocking or buying.
Disposable vapes contain lithium batteries, so they should never go in household bins. Take them to a WEEE recycling point or a retailer collection bin, and keep used devices away from children until you can drop them off.
Disposable vapes remain on Irish shelves for now, but the countdown to 24 January 2027 has begun. Adults who vape can prepare by trying reusable devices, and retailers should plan stock and compliance carefully. As ever, vaping is intended only for adult smokers and current nicotine users, and anyone who does not use nicotine should not start.
